Our Christian camp was originally established in 1947 by the Brethren Churches
under the name Howell’s Mill Camp Association, and its purpose was to establish, own, and conduct a charitable organization for the betterment of conditions in the community and particularly for the spiritual and moral training, uplifting, and general welfare of the youth of the community.
In 1960, the camp was purchased by the Tri-state Churches of Christ/Christian churches and Christ in WV, KY, and OH, and soon after, the name was changed to Howells Mill Christian Assembly (HMCA). For over six decades, these churches have faithfully invested in a vision that continues to transform lives, and the camp has grown into a year-round camp and retreat facility.
Generations have passed through these grounds, many marking their time at camp as pivotal moments in their faith journey—where decisions were made, identities were shaped, and lifelong commitments began. At HMCA, we believe in the power of immersive, Christ-centered experiences. In a world filled with distraction and disconnection, camp offers something rare: genuine community, intentional mentorship, and space to encounter God in meaningful ways. Whether gathered around a campfire, challenged on a high ropes course, or engaged in small group Bible study, campers are invited to grow spiritually, socially, and personally.
Our mission is to promote the spiritual, social, and educational well-being of every camper in a safe, welcoming, and Christ-centered environment. Through dedicated staff, trained volunteers, and strong partnerships with local churches, HMCA continues to raise up the next generation of leaders—equipped with faith, confidence, and a heart to serve.
As we look to the future, HMCA remains committed to expanding access, improving facilities, and deepening our impact so that even more young lives can be shaped by the life-changing power of camp. Rules for participation and acceptance in HMCA programs are the same for everyone. We strive to make a positive impact on the youth of our community by supporting and serving positive extracurricular activities. To meet these goals, we rent our facilities out to local schools, parachurch Christian organizations, and area youth sports leagues during the months of September to May as time and space are available. We are not a public accommodation, but have a rental procedure for our facilities only as limited space is available. Set up a time for a tour to know more.
Please look around our site and contact us if you have any questions. We hope to see you this year at HMCA!
